You Just Cant See Them From The Road

You Just Can’t See Them from the Road is told from the perspective of the land itself — and the stories hidden in plain sight across California’s ranch country. Through sweeping landscapes and intimate interviews, the film uncovers a legacy rarely centered in the narrative of the American West: Black land ownership, stewardship, and generational resilience.

At the heart of the story is Ernest Bufford, steward of Bufford Ranch, the largest Black-owned cattle ranch in California. His presence anchors the documentary, not only as a rancher, but as a conservationist, cultural preserver, and living embodiment of perseverance. Through his leadership and lived experience, the film challenges long-standing assumptions about who shapes rural America and who belongs in the story of the West.

The purpose of the documentary is visibility — to illuminate what has always been there, even when it could not be seen from the road.
